A visit to Ah-ma (grandma) in Taiwan. A gentle, generous spirit that brightened the lives of everyone around her. Her mother tongue is Taiwanese Hokkien which she taught to my mother, who taught to me. When the KMT forcefully took over Taiwan in 1949, they forced the Taiwanese people to learn Mandarin Chinese and made it difficult to learn Taiwanese Hokkien. She also speaks Mandarin Chinese, Japanese and a little bit of English.
